BECAUSE WE WERE THERE
My Brother Knights:
Some of you may remember when I spoke at the last State Convention and drew a comparison about membership recruitment and an ageless movie staring Jimmy Stewart called "It's a wonderful life" In the movie the main character named George was experiencing frustrations and disappointments and at his low point felt things would be better off if he were never born. His guardian angel "Clarence" showed him what life would be like if his wish was realized. Everything good that his town family and friends had experienced was so not just because of the person he was, but most importantly it was "just because he was there". Many of us experience frustrations in membership recruitment and like George sometimes wonder why we even bother to continue, wonder if going through all the work putting on membership drives, speaking at functions and conducting a blitz just to hear so many people say no is worth it. I think we need to sit back and ask ourselves what would life be for many without the Knights of Columbus.
Fortunately we have our own little angel who goes by the name of Fr. Michael J. McGivney. He is at our side each and every day giving us the faith and strength we need to continue his dream of caring for those in need. Whether we know it or not, each of us has made a difference in someone's life. It may have come from a simple handshake or a caring smile. We have offered friendship to many who felt they were alone, we have given hope to many who thought they had no place to turn, young women who where contemplating abortion may have changed their minds when they saw the thousands of people at hands around the Capital and realized just how precious life is. Thousands of people in our country, in our state have been affected, their lives made better. We have seen proof of this through our Surge with Service program. But for every charitable act we do know, there are far more good things that has happened which we will never be aware of, but has happened: BECAUSE WE WERE THERE.
Like George in the movie, we need to realize just how important we are as Knights and how we have made a tremendous difference in the lives of so many and how much more we can do with increased membership. Lets use the frustrations of the past as a challenge for the future and continue to ask, continue to bring the good news of our Order to our Church and Community.
PLEASE
CONTINUE TO RECRUIT
FOR OUR CHURCH
FOR OUR ORDER
Fraternally Yours
