The Maine State Council is gathering in Rockport this weekend (April 18, 19 & 20, 2008) at the Samoset Resort for its 113th annual convention. The gathering hosted a First Degree initiation last evening, at which many District Deputies from around the state participated. Saturday's business session commenced at 8:40 AM today. Resolutions from several committees were read and accepted.

UPDATE #6
Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Bishop Richard Malone celebrated Mass witht the Knights at 4 pm today, continuing a long-standing state convention tradition. In his homily, Bishop Malone spoke of his attendance at ceremonies with Pope Benedict XVI during his trip to the U.S. He reminded convention participants that Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life." He reminded those in attendance that we are to proclaim the joy that is ours in Jesus, and share with the rest of the world how central Jesus is to our lives. Echoing the recent message of Pope Benedict, Bishop Malone admonished us to avoid the danger of relativism. We must reject relativism, he said, noting that there are absolute truths that cannot be trivialized or "customized" to our will. He pointed out that we are the yeast in the dough and that we need to help the faith of others to rise through our example and our action.

The bishop concluded the service by reminding us of these words spoken at Mass, "Happy are those who are called to His supper." He expressed his joy at being with the Knights at their convention as we share Jesus' supper with each other and with the world.

UPDATE #7
Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 8:15 pm

At this evening's banquet, Bishop Malone urged all members to encourage religious vocations among their children and others in the community. Monsignor Marc Caron thanked the Knights for their support of vocations. State Deputy Robert King presented the bishop with a plaque of appreciation for Chancery staff, and also made a financial contribution to the bishop's efforts at promoting Catholic teaching on television in Maine.

Troy Roy of the Harold Alfond Cancer Center accepted the next installment on the multi-year commitment by the Knights of Maine to support this endeavor.

UPDATE #8
Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Supreme Director Logan T. Ludwig addressed the convention this evening. He said it isn't enough to do things; we must to the RIGHT things. He said Knights follow this principle. We knights connect to people and share our faith with them.

Ludwig spoke of the excellent insurance program of the Knights of Columbus. The KofC insurance program has not lost a single penny during the recent financial upheaval, said Ludwig, because the insurance program does the right things, and it does them right.
